Locomotive Maintenance Facility

As part of the design team contracted to BergerABAM, Helix Design Group provided full architectural design services for this new Locomotive Maintenance Facility. Army anti-terrorism/force protection and sustainable design requirements were incorporated into the design of the facility.

This LEED Silver rated building provides storage and maintenance space for three locomotives owned and operated by Joint Base Lewis-McChord. The 5,800 SF building features two tracks, a maintenance pit, and small administrative area. The facility provides an overhead bridge crane, a maintenance fluid distribution and collection system, air compressor, and workbenches.

Sustainable features include recycled material content of over 30% in the building materials, annual energy-use reduction of 18% through a well-insulated envelope, translucent insulated panels for natural lighting and efficient mechanical system design and equipment selection, and annual water savings of 30% through low flow plumbing fixtures. The overall design of the facility promotes an improved environment for workers with low-VOC emitting interior products and controls for lighting, ventilation, and heating of individual work areas.
