Vernita Safety Rest Area

Helix Design Group designed a replacement for this rest area safety building located east of Yakima, Washington, on SR 24. The new, 1,306 SF building includes restroom facilities, mechanical and electrical storage space, and a vending machine enclosure.

Working within the State’s budget, the Helix team revised the original concept to produce a more interesting design, utilizing building lighting and materials to increase the safety for pedestrians using the facility. Attention to building materials that were vandal-resistant was a common theme throughout the interior and exterior of the building. The existing site was re-paved, and new sidewalks were installed from the parking areas to the new building meeting ADA accessibility requirements.
